NOMAN’S LAND, 1998
Untitled (142)
Silver gelatin prints, 11" x 14"
NoMan’s Land, is based on 1940’s portraits of the heroes of my youth, taken by the gay photographer George Platt Lynes—successful and elegant men who possessed the kind of beauty that emanates from a sense of solid accomplishment in the world. The fact that these scions of artistic achievement were subjected to Lynes’ homo-eroticizing gaze attracted me so I insinuated myself into their clothes and their pose, embracing their glamour, appropriating their success.
